Moka Java was the first “official” coffee blend to catch on in the West. Named for coffees that reached Europe from the bustling Red Sea port of Mocha (in modern day Yemen) and the Dutch colonial estates in Indonesia, this blend could shrink the imperial world into the space of a cup for 17th Century connoisseurs. It remains one of the world's most popular blends, and for good reason: the wild, fruity energy of Ethiopian and Arabian coffees balance out perfectly with the full, spicy character of beans from Indonesia.
